Official price vs online ticket: what changes

The question everyone asks: if the ticket office charges €15.50, why pay €21 or more on a platform? Short answer: you're not paying for the entry, you're paying for the service. Here's what each option adds:

OptionFromWhat's includedBest for
Ticket office / official site€15.50Timed entry ticketThose booking 1–2 weeks ahead
Skip the line + audio guide€21Fast-track entry, audio guide app, flexible cancellation on most faresMost independent travellers

The sold-out trap

The official site releases a limited quota per time slot. Around Easter, the April Fair and long weekends it sells out weeks ahead. When that happens, platforms holding distributor allocations are the realistic alternative to missing out — which is why it pays to check both before giving up on a date.

How to buy without mistakes

  1. Pick your time slot first, not your day. At 9:30 am the palace is quiet; midday belongs to tour groups. Your slot shapes the visit more than the day of the week does.
  2. Decide on the Cuarto Real Alto upfront. It's only sold together with an entry ticket and has limited hourly passes — don't leave it for the ticket office.
  3. Check the cancellation policy. Official tickets aren't always refundable; many platform fares cancel free up to 24 hours ahead.
  4. Bring your ticket on your phone plus photo ID. Tickets are personal and ID may be checked, especially with reduced rates.
